 Local Mountain Bike Trails

Memorial Park Trails-

Location:
on the south side of the Memorial Drive across from the jogging track, in the woods behind the softball and soccer fields.

Description:
moderately technical due to an abundance of tree roots, numerous tight turns, and short steep descents and climbs. A good place to develop off road bike handling skills. Trails are closed when it is wet. Call (713) 437-6588 to see if it is open.

Terry Hershey Park/ Anthills

Location:
take I-10 west to Eldridge, go south on Eldridge turn right on Memorial -trail parking is on both sides of Memorial about a half mile down. The paved trail is right there at parking lot. Follow paved trail south to the Eldridge Bridge, ride over it then drop down under the bridge to ride the dirt single-track that runs along the bayou.

Description:
The paved trails are the best in Houston, wide smooth with gradual hills and pretty landscaping. Perfect for all types of riders but can be crowded on nice weekends. The Anthills are the dirt single-track portion and they are a little less technical than Memorial overall. However for dirt jumpers there is a bowl section with some steep big jumps that could break a novice rider’s bike and body. Heavy rain makes the dirt unrideable but you can ride the paved trails in any weather.

Jack Brooks Park

Location:
Take I-45 south to FM2004 by the dog track, go south on 2004 and look for park entrance on the right. About a 35-minute drive.

Description:
This place is unique. It has a bunch of canals that have been dredged and the silt piled up into mounds that you ride over. Additionally some locals have built wooden obstacles like ramps and seesaws to ride. It is totally unrideable after a rain.

Double Lake

Location:
Take 59 north to Cleveland, exit 2025 turn left, go about 18 miles, look for Double Lake Recreation area sign on the right. About an hour drive.

Description:
This is the best beginner trail in the region. It is an 8-mile single-track through a pretty section of woods deep in the Sam Houston National Forest. Bring your lame no-trail-riding friends. Start at the same time and try to lap them on your second lap. Even though it’s easy, it’s still fun.

Huntsville State Park

Location:
Take I-45 north to Huntsville, look for Huntsville State Park sign on the right side of the highway, and follow the signs into the park. About an hour drive.

Description:
About a ten mile single-track with some wider easier sections. Aesthetically interesting terrain, gentle hills, wooden bridges, rooty sections. Fun for all levels except whiny dirt haters.
